ABOUT THE ROLE

A Community Outreach Officer works out in the community helping vulnerable residents with their basic to complex energy needs.

You will support householders with impartial energy advice, understanding their needs and finding pathways to support them in their own homes and to help householders save money and energy.

The householder is at the heart of what we do, empowering them to understand their energy needs, helping them reduce the running costs of their home but also to enable them to live in a warm and healthy home.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As part of our existing outreach worker team, you’ll be working with the general public and creating links with partner agencies to tackle the impact of fuel poverty.
  • To engage with professional health workers such as GP practices and health visitors; community based social prescribers and health and social care organisations.
  • Providing training and presentations to key partners to understand the links between health & cold homes.
  • Attending events in the Coventry area with partner agencies but also holding and managing your own independent advice surgeries in strategic locations across the city.
  • You will be helping to prevent re-admission to hospital; reduce over-reliance on GPs/home care providers; reduce social isolation; improve health and wellbeing whilst at the same time improving people’s lives by tackling fuel poverty and helping people to improve their home’s energy efficiency.
  • You’ll be supporting people in their homes with energy advice and offering relevant support.
  • Delivering with a holistic approach – providing residents with advice on energy saving tips, income maximisation, advice and referrals to help improve the fabric of their homes with funded insulation measures.
  • Provision and fitting of low cost small measures e.g. LED lightbulbs, draughtproofing.
  • You’ll take the time to understand people’s often complex needs and understand the right referral pathways to seek further help and support.
  • You’ll also provide support to other front-line workers so that they can understand the relationship between warm homes and improved health outcomes.
  • The role is based in the community you serve for at least three days per week but you will also spend time working from home and in the office completing admin, assisting with inbound calls to our freephone number, follow up calls and feedback.

Essential skills:

  • The ability to work independently and manage your own workload
  • Experience of working with vulnerable households within their homes
  • Experience of handling complex and sometimes difficult situations
  • Knowledge and experience of housing, health and social care practice
  • Experience at delivering public energy advice through presentations and training sessions
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of audiences
  • An eye for detail with excellent numerical skills
  • Flexibility – being able to respond positively to changes in work at short notice and to set deadlines

Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge of domestic energy advice and affordable warmth issues
  • Level 3 in Energy Awareness (although full training will be given)
  • Good general knowledge of energy industry
  • Experience of working in – or supporting – local authorities or other statutory bodies

TRAINING

Training and support will be provided to you including opportunities to attend short training courses and potentially gain qualifications as needed.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Successful candidates will be asked to attend a preliminary interview online followed by a face to face interview (if successful) at our head office near Salford Priors, Warwickshire.

ABOUT US

This is an exciting opportunity to join Act on Energy working on a flagship project with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The Casework Officer role will provide vital support to vulnerable communities across the city, helping to create an integrated model of health care and support.

The energy efficiency sector is experiencing significant growth, with ever-increasing levels of fuel poverty accompanied by assistance programmes. The successful candidate will work with people with various needs, treating each as an individual and assisting them with appropriate measures.

The links between poor housing conditions, fuel poverty and health are well-established. This project aims to reduce these inequalities, improving health and reducing the need for NHS services.

ABOUT YOU

This role suits individuals with experience of working with vulnerable households, families, and carers. Experience with front-line health and social care teams will be advantageous. Understanding climate and sustainability issues is valued.

You will be a confident communicator, comfortable working with multiple stakeholders, people-focused and process-driven with a methodical and organised approach. Successful casework relies on quality data, so you should be able to keep comprehensive records and understand how data can be used to tell a meaningful story.

THE ROLE

You will offer person-centred support, improving knowledge of energy efficiency, budgeting and confidence-building for vulnerable fuel-poor households. You will develop an understanding of each household's circumstances and their energy/welfare needs.

As an effective coordinator and advocate, you will actively manage casework, produce individual action plans, and complete pre/post evaluation activities with our project partners.

You will support Act on Energy's regional activity, working with the public and partner agencies to tackle fuel poverty inequalities. Building relationships with community groups and front-line public sector workers, including GP practices, hospitals, health/social care organisations, and allied teams.

This role offers opportunities to genuinely impact communities by preventing hospital admissions, reducing reliance on GPs/home care, addressing isolation, improving health/wellbeing while saving money and improving lives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

You will provide holistic energy, financial and budgeting advice to ensure vulnerable fuel-poor households access needed assistance through grant schemes and referral pathways.

You will understand people's needs, empowering them to be knowledgeable and resourceful. You will also support partner agencies' front-line staff in understanding the warm homes-health outcomes relationship.

You will work in the community, from home if required, and Act on Energy's offices when required.

SKILLS

You must work independently, managing your workload effectively understanding privacy and safeguarding.
